St.Gallen, July 2026 – With the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, a dress featuring embroidery by Forster Willi has become part of the museum's permanent collection. The dress was designed by Cuban-American fashion designer Isabel Toledo and worn by Michelle Obama at Barack Obama's first Presidential Inauguration in January 2009.
Opened in June 2026, the Obama Presidential Center tells the story of Barack Obama's presidency and showcases key objects from that era. Among them is Michelle Obama's iconic inaugural dress, which is still regarded as one of the defining fashion pieces of her time as First Lady.
Recognition for St.Gallen Embroidery
For Forster Willi, the inclusion of the dress in the museum's permanent collection is a remarkable recognition of the St.Gallen embroidery tradition. For more than 120 years, the company has been creating embroidery for international Haute Couture and Prêt-à-Porter collections, collaborating with some of the world's most renowned fashion houses. The inclusion of the dress highlights the international significance of St.Gallen embroidery far beyond the world of fashion.
"We are incredibly proud that a dress featuring embroidery from our company has become part of a museum documenting such an important chapter of American history. It is a powerful testament to how Swiss craftsmanship and St.Gallen embroidery can become part of cultural and historical milestones," says Emanuel Forster, CEO of Forster Rohner AG.
